Wondrous square box

One of the parts of my day that I superbly enjoy is watching TV after a day out working with kids. CSI on Monday, Damages on Tues (lurve AXN) and Life and Death (Discovery Channel!) on Wednesday. Thursday is 6ft Under (on my laptop). Friday, I usually am out late.

Tis is, in fact, rather new to me. Cos before I became a full time tutor, I actually hardly watch any TV. HK series, once in awhile, yes. But I must say I didn't quite appreciate the feeling of sitting on the couch, devoting whatever's left of my brain capacity for the day to what's going on the tube. It was like I always had other things to do.

But, that has all changed. hehe.. Now, I'm really very active in finding entertainment for myself.

However, I really need to pay more attention to the news. I lost my habit of reading news online since some time ago. If you can consider the habit cultivated at all. Deeply ashamed of myself for this, really. Perhaps having RSS feed on my desktop will help. Hmm... worth considering.

On the move, I found...

We Feel Fine

I was satisfying my retail therapy the cheapo way. I was on the home of Kate Spade. I lurve the handbags. I like colourful, refreshing and practical totes. I need to be able to throw a lot of things into the bag I carry. I like my bag to spell: Down to earth, outgoing and witty. Actually, I think the best selling point is its signature kelly green colour. I adore it! It's one of my Fab Bags on my facebook.

But the point is, I was navigating, browsing and one click led to another. I landed on the We Feel Fine project. And upon even more curious clicks, I landed on this page, which informed me that Singapore has another first. We are first in the list of Saddest Cities. About 2% of the feelings captured from Singapore, in this project of human emotion exploration, is 'sad'.

It's quite interesting, this project.

And I really like the chattanooga carson and belle haven bridget. I mean, the handbags. I like the wallet collection too! Maybe I should get Anna to check it out for me when she's in NY next month.

Die of ecstasy

This song, "Don't know why", coming through the airwaves now, always reminds me of an afternoon in my office during the days when I was a PA. Level 50, OUB centre. Sounds damn prestigious to be working in a boardroom office so high up there.

Joyce and I were, as usual, busy doing nothing constructive and serious/urgent in our respective space, facing each other. I've brought some of my CDs to play using her boss's stereo system in his office. She chose to play Norah Jones "Don't know why". It was after lunch; we were waiting to knock off, yet another day unscathed by the silly antics and eyerolls-inducing bosses (and their lackey).

So, you see, it was very, very relaxing. We were msning, surfing the net, I was probably blogging or looking for other jobs online. All the while, keeping our fingers crossed that the corridor outside the boardroom stay as quiet as ever, with no indication that our wannabe bosses were on their way to work (just when we were about to knock off work).

Everytime I hear this song, I remember fondly of the time Mel, Joyce and myself worked together and fought against the dishonest and shallow conman-personalities of our bosses. And the view from 50th floor, OUB centre, looking out into clubs-and-restaurants-lined Singapore River, Connaught Dr, and Marina Center and Esplanade in the distance.

Some nice memory from a short stint working for an empty and failing company.

Keep my number.

It will come in handy. It did, just now. Didn't it?

When you are shutting off from the rest of the world, if you need to feel connected to just one person, I will be a wise choice. You don't have much choices to begin with, anyway. haha...

Be reassured.

Official Club Photo!

Apple has just handed out the official club photo! The SBC's photo!

It's so nice. It reminds me of how when all kinds of shit poured down on me, you passed me an umbrella before running back to your own shelter.

Ella, ella... you can stand under my umbrella...

I'm putting it right on the top of my desk!

Kyn's windows.

Q: What's the thing you like about her?
Her ans: She's considerate.
My correct ans: She's away most of the time.

Q: What's the one thing you don't like about her?
Her ans: She's slow.
Our correct ans: Just one???

We love you so much, darling. We do. And we really want you back. Just not more than twice a year. Ok?

*muaks*

p.s. the grilled bacon was marvelicious! Thanks for making my Dad's year with the shabu-shabu beef!

our worlds collided

While we played the game, Taboo, I've learnt a few things.

Ln: You see this on the ceiling...
Ap & me: fan!
Ln: No...
Ky: Lizard.
The word is 'lizard'.
I learnt that ceilings in HK and GZ are infested with lizards while some ceilings in SG have ceiling fans.

Wn: Sun Ho... she...
Ln: pastor.
Wn: Ya... and she's a lousy singer. So, she has to...
Ap: Pray.
The word is 'lip-sync'.
I learnt that if you can't sing, you'd better be really good in praying. Prayers can help in every single thing.

Ap: Ok, not one, not two... so...
Wn & me: three.
Ap: Ya! And three...
Wn & me: Threesome!
The word is '3-D'.
I learnt that playing Taboo can lead to serious misunderstanding about our innermost desires.

Wn: The yellow thing, you know... it's yellow... you use it when your shoe is spoilt, you use it...
Ky: Iodine.
Wn: You use it to stick your shoes...
Me: Iodine??? You use iodine to stick shoes?
Ky: Um, superglue!
The word is 'superglue'.
I learnt that if you don't have iodine to mend your shoes, you can use superglue. But, iodine's better. Just make sure it's the yellow kind.

some kind of progression

What must have happened when you read, watch or hear a truly sad and unfortunate something and you feel quite indifferent, or at best, think it's kind of a funny irony? On the other hand, what must have happened when you read, watch or hear something uplifting, or a happiness belonging to others, and you feel so moved that you tear?

Moments of intense happiness is moving, whereas periods of pain and sadness are treated with indifference or resigned acceptance. How rare is the former and how frequent the latter!

I believe there's always room for worse. That's why I stopped hoping.

As for the party animals

That will include you, FVB Kyn. We heard about it from Leen. A party animal who fainted at a party? That's such a shame! You might as well drink fruit punch!

And because your effort to go party out with me has been only almost existent (i.e. pretty much non-existent), I shall not rely on you. Honestly, such a brat, only waiting for Cheryl to put you on invite list.

Reminder: 16th, steamboat dinner. If Leen likes dogs, we'll have it at my place. If not, Apple is good to have us.

xxx

The one who needs to be able to sing to the songs. Will be Wenn. Please learn more new songs then. I think those we know are our club-dinosaur-markers.

Same reminder as above.

xxx

Woman, haven't heard noise from you for awhile. See you on Sat ok! =) huggzz

xxx

Should have just sent email to you all lah... as if you will read this blog in time. The PA in the group will sms you all then. Jeezzzz.....

For you, the reader, have a
just-the-way-i-like-it kind of lunar year ahead!

*note to fellow primates born in the year of the monkey: doesn't sound like a smashing year ahead for us. But, we always have our means of partying and having fun, even in adversity! So... Have Fun Ahead!

Maria on standby

I'm a highly-educated domestic helper as of now till when my four taitai friends finish their round of mahjong. Well, two taitais and the other two are just taitai-wannabes, technically speaking. So highly-educated and under-employed that I'm blogging on taitai Teo's laptop now. Anytime one of my mistresses needs water or anything from outside the walls of this games room, the serf will have to drop her blogging and spring into action. Exciting.

But the last time anything like this happened, Singaporeans were still queuing up for Hello Kitty at Macnalds. Madness. So, I consider it a blessing that slavery in this group has been abolished until tonight.

*Ade games this round. 4 tais. And Viv and Juan have expressed their utmost dismay. Wenn seems rather accepting of the $1.60 debit. Let the blogging continue.

It is, upon careful consideration, rather odd that I'm here instead of clubbing with Kyn (Welcome back, darlin!!!) at PLAY now. After all, surely, music, booze and dancing are way more fun than serfdom. But, like I said, the last time this happened... blahblah...

*Juan just lamented that she's the losing one, so far. But hey! They are only into the east wind now. Lotsa opportunities to recoup, Juan! Gambatte! The serf acts as a motivator and entertainer as well.

Before assuming my duty here, I went for dinner at Inle with my family. It's Janet's birthday. Recently, by using Janet as a bait, we have been able to get my dad out to have family dinner at places more than 30 minutes bus-ride away from the house. Quite an achievement. They liked Burmese food all right. Though it's a bit to the salty side.

*Juan has begun to suspect that the other three conspired to make her sit at the place where the fengshui is the worst. That's one of the things I dislike about gambling - it makes people paranoid. haha

No. Actually, I do not dislike gambling. I'm very sporting in CNY gambling. But that's limited to card games. I can't stand Mahjong because it takes too bloody damn long to finish the game. I am the most patient person I know (and I'm not asking for anyone's opinion). But to sit down and play Mahjong? Sorry. Out of my threshold. Gambling, to me, is a matter of luck. Let's either win or lose within 10 minutes, can? I don't want to strategise and observe tiles swimming in the sea. So, there! Mahjong is a strenuous mind-game to me and yet, there's no promise of reward. Not my kind of game.

Which is why, being the Maria while my friends play this tedious game is my chosen destiny.

*and the blogging has to stop now because it's time for the first tea-break.

Fantastic way to spend Saturday night, don't you think? I mean it. At least, I don't have to spend anything more than the cab fare home later. Frugality goes a long way.

== While cooking Maggi mee for Mam, Maria remembers the last time was not Hello Kitty Macnalds, but at home with Apple, Wenn, Kay and my mummy. The menu comprised of seaweed chicken nuggets, Maggie mee and honey drink. ==
